How to Work the Unfair Lures Mullet 70, 90 and 120 (Suspend and Fast Suspend Models)

Not sure how to work the Unfair Lures Mullet 70, 90 and 120 (Suspend and Fast Suspend Models)?  Watch this video and use this technique and you'll be sure to catch the fish!

The Mullet 70 and Mullet 90 are available in both the suspend and fast suspend model; while the Mullet 120 is currently only available in the fast suspend model. The differences between the slow and fast suspend models is that the slow suspend is a little bit lighter and has a higher pitched rattle; therefore the noise it makes is going to be different in the water.

I have used the Mullet 120 in as shallow as a foot and a half of water and as deep as seven feet; it really just depends on how long you want to let it suspend before you start to retrieve it. This is a great lure to use along the seawall, especially if you have a lot of wind blowing up against there. It also works great around deep docks, let it get three to five feet down and start retrieving it and if there's a big fish in there, it's gonna come out and smash your lure. The Mullet 120 is also an ideal bait for fishing on the beach because it's going to cut right through the wind and it casts really well. It's not so heavy that you can throw it on a medium action rod. The Mullet 120 will stay a foot under the surface, depending on how fast you are retrieving it. You can retrieve this bait a little faster because it is heavy and it's not going to want to pop up to the surface as easy. This lure has excellent rolling and swimming action, it just kind of wobbles and rolls and looks a lot like a mullet cruising along. 

The Mullet 70 is ideal for when you need a small bait to get under the docks. The way you work the Mullet 70 or the Mullet 90 doesn't change from how you work the Mullet 120. We work all of the suspending and fast suspending mullet models the same way; a steady retrieve with light twitches or pulls.  The only thing that changes is how long you wait to let it suspend and the speed at which you retrieve it.

The key to this lure is you don't work it a whole lot, the less you do for it, the better it will do for you. Just use a very slow and steady retrieve and mix in a little twitch, just a little pull, that's all it takes. If you start twitching it a lot, your leader is going to get tangled around the hooks; that's not the way this lure was designed to be worked. If you try to do too much with it, you're just going to be frustrated because your line is going to keep getting tangled. So again, slow and steady retrieve and mix in a little pull every now and again, just barely moving the rod.

How to Work the Unfair Lures Mullet 90 Topwater Sub-Surface Twitch

Not sure how to work the Unfair Lures Mullet 90 Topwater Sub-Surface Twitch? Watch this video and use this technique and you'll be sure to catch the fish!

Hopefully this post and video will clear up any confusion as to why this lure is referred to as a topwater sub-surface twitch. The reason it is called a sub-surface twitch is because it's not a true floating topwater. As soon as you start to work it or move it at all, it comes up to the surface and it wakes just under the surface and if you add any action to it then it comes up and works a lot more like a topwater. It will stay underneath and work in that two to six inch range, just under the surface.

The key to this lure is you don't work it a whole lot, the less you do for it, the better it will do for you. Just use a very slow and steady retrieve and mix in a little pull, I wouldn't even call it a twitch. If you start twitching it a lot, trying to walk the dog with it, your leader is going to get tangled around the hooks; that's not the way this lure was designed to be worked. If you try to do too much with it, you're just going to be frustrated because your line is going to keep getting tangled. So again, slow and steady retrieve and mix in a little pull every now and again, just barely moving the rod. If you use this technique, it's going to look just like a mullet waking right under the surface, just popping up to the top. After watching the video, you'll be able to see that it does work a lot more like a topwater than a sub-surface bait.

A pretty cool benefit with this lure is that if a fish rolls on it or misses it, if you pause it for a split second the lure will sink just below the surface and most of the time the fish come back and smack it again! Whereas, with a true topwater that stays up on top and you keep working it, a lot of times they won't come back for it.

How to Work the Unfair Lures Sinking Shrimp

Not sure how to work the Unfair Lures Sinking Shrimp? Watch this video and use this technique and you'll be sure to catch them!

What's neat about this lure is that it can sink and go to the bottom, but you can actually walk the dog with it also along the top. You barely twitch the sinking shrimp and it will pop straight up, just like a shrimp trying to pop out of the grass.

The key to this lure is giving it enough time to sink back down after twitching it; if you twitch it too hard it will jump up a foot to a foot and a half off the bottom. If you're just barely wanting to move it along, just give it a very short little bump. With very, very short little twitches of the rod you can do the walk the dog action. If you get to a pot hole you want to drop the shrimp down in, you just stop twitching it and the shrimp is going to glide right down in the hole.

This technique works for all models of the Unfair Lures Sinking Shrimp, the 85 (smaller shrimp), the 110 (larger shrimp) and the 110 (larger shrimp in the super fast suspend/sinking model).

October Jensen Beach / Stuart Fishing Report

The bite has been great this month! From the bridges to the flats. The trout bite has started to heat up with the water cooling off enough for us to think it's time to invest in new waders again. Look for sandbars on either side of the river and you will find trout. The bite has been in 3-5 feet of water. The Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash or the D.O.A. Shrimp have both worked very well. Ryan put his buddy, Shawn on his biggest trout ever, it was just shy of 27 inches!

The big schools of jacks have been everywhere in the Indian River from the Jensen Causeway to the power lines. They are all 15 to 30 pound fish and in schools of hundreds. We've been lucky enough to catch them passing by the west side a few times and they will hit just about anything you throw. During a Joupdog Wading Adventures trip, one client was lucky enough to hook into one of these bruisers and land it after about a 20 minute fight!

The redfish are starting to show up a bit more around the mangroves on the east side and the shallows of the west bank. The redfish bite should only get better with every cold front.

Away from the flats, the bridges have also been extremely good lately. One night, we set out to catch tarpon and ended up jumping off four of them. Later that night, we landed two big snook that hit at the base of the pilings. One taped out to 36" and the other to 40". The past week the flare hawk bite has really picked up too. Every night we have been, we have managed at least one over slot fish and often three fish or more. Most of the fish are over slot, but the occasional slot fish is mixed in.

The bite has been great and the mullet run is on the decline. November should have some interesting fishing in store for everyone and we can only hope it is as good as this month!

The real key is to make a long cast, retrieve it very slowly and don't stop...that's the ticket. If you stop, it's going to pop back up to the top and you're going to have another 6 or 7 feet before it actually gets down to the depth you want it.

At Treasure Coast Tackle, we believe it is important to take a kid fishing. Why? Not only is it fun, but it's a great way to spend quality time with a child. Fishing is also a perfect opportunity to educate children about taking care of our environment and using our resources wisely. Another great reason to take a kid fishing is that it's a physical activity outdoors...away from all of the electronics and technology, which can be quite relaxing.

RULES:

• Picture must be of a child (under 16 years of age) and also contain a fish in the picture OR a fishing pole (where it is obvious they were fishing).
• Only send ONE picture of your child; the only exception is if you have more than one child, then you may send one photo of each child and we will put them together in a "picstitch".

July Jensen Beach / Stuart Fishing Report

July has been a great month of fishing. The trout bite has really picked up with multiple fish over the 25 inch mark being caught. They have been dialed in on the Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash or the D.O.A. Shrimp. The majority of the trout have been on the flats with the exception of one or two being caught underneath docks.

The snook bite has also been exceptional, the first hour or sunrise, or the last hour or sunset, they can be found cruising open water around the mullet pods which seem to be everywhere this time of year. Towards the end of the month, Ryan landed his personal best snook at 42 inches and 30 pounds on the Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash. If you are looking for snook more towards midday, try underneath docks or on any of the pipes that may be pushing out of the water from the mangroves.

For those of you down south, the peacock bass fishing has also been fantastic. We met up with Adam of Reel-Deal Adventures and Derek from Outdoor Performance Apparel and put a beat down on the peacock bass, landing nearly 30 peacocks in 3 hours. Most of the fish were up to hit the Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash but some of the more picky fish were caught on live bait.

July was great and hopefully August will be even better!

Reflection on the Birth of Treasure Coast Tackle

When we started Treasure Coast Tackle about nine months ago (October 2012), we knew it wasn't going to be "easy" to get our name out there with zero dollars allocated for advertising and we fully expected it to start out slowly. We started by getting the required licenses and gathering a small amount of inventory. We then designed our own website (a lot of trial and error) and started relying heavily on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram - @treasurecoasttackle, Blog and YouTube) and word of mouth to promote our business.

What we didn't plan on was being met with resistance and obstacles at several corners we turned. It has often seemed like we are taking one step forward and two steps back or running in place. For example, there was a particular local tackle shop that had a problem with us selling the same brands they did.

Treasure Coast Tackle is an online tackle store that is completely run by family only. If you are interested in reading more about Treasure Coast Tackle and what it has done for us, you can read about it here: The Birth of Treasure Coast Tackle. I will touch on one of the biggest things having Treasure Coast Tackle has done for us; it has allowed me (Erica) to stay at home with our 3-year-old son who was born with several rare conditions which in turn relieves some of the financial burden of having a single primary income for a family of five and offsets a little bit of the medical costs associated with our son's constant care. It is our hope that this post clears up any confusion as to what Treasure Coast Tackle is all about. We sell a number of different brands, most of which are sold at local tackle shops. While we do not fix rods or spool line on reels, we put in as many hours as any brick and mortar store, using all the lures we sell and promoting our business so that when someone asks a question about how a particular lure works or how it performs we can give them an educated answer, not an opinion based on how it looks in the box.

Comparison: Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash Vs. Unfair Lures Mullet

One of the most common questions we receive here at Treasure Coast Tackle is "what's the difference between the Rip-N-Slash and the Mullet?" This is a valid question because they are both the same length and are viewed as "twitch baits".

Let's start with the Rip-N-Slash; our favorite way to work this lure is with aggressive twitches combined with a pause. The Rip-N-Slash is designed to dart from side to side very erratically to mimic a fleeing or disoriented small bait fish. This is the perfect lure for getting a reaction strike out of fish that may not be actively feeding. The combination of flash and wild action are just too much for the fish to resist!  You can check out our YouTube video "How to Work the Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash" here.

Now let's move on to the Mullet; this lure was designed by taking a laser scan of a real finger mullet to make the mold. By doing this, the sonic signature is exactly what fish know as being a mullet. Having said that, this lure has nowhere near the darting action of the Rip-N-Slash. We work the Mullet with small twitches of the rod, also with a pause mixed in. The lure will wobble and roll slightly, exactly like an injured mullet and since the water displacement, or sonic signature is exactly the same as a real finger mullet, fish usually inhale this lure...when they hit it, it's to eat! Most of the fish we catch have this lure all the way in their mouth. It's for this reason that we use at least 40lb Trik Fish leader if we are targeting snook...they hammer this thing!

The Rip-N-Slash is currently only available in the 70mm 1/3oz size, but the mullet is available in a 70mm 3/8oz suspending model or a 1/2oz fast suspending model. We recommend using the suspending model if the fish are in less than 3 feet of water or if you are trying to stay just under the surface. The fast suspending model is ideal for working in the 2-4 feet range.

June Jensen Beach / Stuart Fishing Report

June was great to us and you can expect July to only be better! The month started with a great topwater bite. Big jacks and snook were cruising the flats early morning and we picked up some big jacks and a stud 38" snook. The later the month got, the windier it got. We switched up to the Unfair Lures Rip-N-Slash and the big trout have been crushing it, with plenty of 24-26" fish being caught. The highlight of the month had to be the slam we got, 30 inch trout, 24 inch redfish and a small snook. While the reds are few and far in between this time of year in Stuart, they can be caught. Usually they are under the docks or tucked back in the mangroves. Early morning should yield lots of nice trout in July and the night time snook bite should be heating up. The fish are there, get out and catch 'em! May Jensen Beach / Stuart Fishing Report

The month of May has brought summer like conditions along with it. Calm and sunny mornings with windy, rainy afternoons. The fishing has been good when you can get out in between the storms, in the evenings or early in the morning. The snook remain stacked up under the docks. Eric Root caught his personal best snook at 35 inches while wading with Treasure Coast Tackle. On the last day of the month, Ryan landed his personal best snook at 40 inches!

As far as redfish go, they are few and far between, but the ones you get are good ones! David caught a solid 27 inch redfish and Chris Keyes won the redfish division for the Florida Sportsman Southeast Bash & Tournament with a 30 inch redfish.

Tarpon are gradually making a showing in the St. Lucie River. Shane Jones caught his first tarpon ever near the Roosevelt Bridge a couple of weeks ago.

The trout have continued to elude us for the most part but with summer on its way, you can expect them to be on the flats early in the morning. Ryan also hooked into an unexpected guest when he caught about a 3 foot lemon shark while wading during a Joupdog Wading Adventures trip!

Almost all fish were caught on the Unfair Lures or the 12 Fathom Fat Sam Mullets. May was great and hopefully June will be even better! Good luck and tight lines...
